rita mulcahy pmp exam prep

Rita Mulcahy PMP exam prep book needs no introduction.

However, as a Project Management professional and practitioner, I find it an obligation to write the pros and cons of this amazing book for new aspirants, who are about to embark on the PMP journey.

The Book goes with the title:
PMP Exam Prep: Accelerated Learning to Pass the Project Management Professional (PMP) Exam 9th Edition by Rita Mulcahy.

Rita took a totally different approach from other authors on writing this best seller book on passing the PMP exam.

The PMP Exam surrounds around PMBOK and since PMBOK is the Bible, many authors have tried to focus on PMBOK content and expound it with further details and explanations.

However, Rita’s Book is not bound to the processes and ITTO’s approach, rather it presents it’s own Rita Mulcahy process chart or as famously known as Rita process map and is focus on passing the PMP exam.

Rita Mulcahy PMP Exam Prep 9th Edition Book Review

The book is very well written and in an informal way.
The book is written in a conversational tone, once you start reading the book, you’ll feel as if Rita Mulcahy is talking to you.

Though Rita PMP exam prep book is primarily focused on passing the PMP exam, it will also bring the best out of you by putting you in a project manager role.

It’s a very interesting read and hopefully will take you in its magic. Once you dive deep into the book it’s pretty easy to follow and comprehend and make sense in the end.

The PMP prep book has plenty of tips for PMP exam and you’ll encounter the term “Know, for the exam …” in abundance.

  • PMP Exam Prep Rita Mulcahy’s book is best known for tricks of the trade.
  • Rita PMP book is famous for its PMI-ism.

You must read Rita’s book as the primary source for your PMP exam preparation: it will give you; the tips, tricks, and technique; PMI’s point of view on attempting the exam; and the mindset of the project manager.

You can read it along with Head First PMP guide for an in-depth explanation of PMBOK and Project Management terms.

You may be an avid Project Manager with years of experience, but the PMP exam does not test you based on your knowledge and understanding of managing your projects.

Rather the exam tests you on how PMI believes the project to be initiated, managed, monitor, and closed, this is where Rita Mulcahy’s PMP Exam Prep book comes into play.

The book tells you PMI’s approach of directing projects.

There is a question bank at the end of each chapter, along with an explanation.
I would encourage you to attempt the questions and then check the answer and explanation.
The questions explanation will help you burn the concept to your mind.

Recommendations:

  • Follow every step of the book.
  • Take notes of all the tips.
  • Attempt the exercises, questions, and explanations.
  • Understand PMI’s mindset, explained thoroughly in the book.

Rita Mulcahy Book Faqs:

Shall I go for Rita Mulcahy’s Process game or follow PMBOK processes?
If you want to understand a project flow theoretically, then follow PMBOK processes. Also, you have no choice not to.
If you want to understand how real Project Management is done, then follow Rita process flow.

Can I read Rita Mulcahy PMP Exam Prep for CaPM Exam?
I personally don’t recommend CaPM exam aspirants to use this book title for their preparation.
It will give you the mindset of PMI but there’s not enough content for you to pass the CaPM exam.

Can I use Rita Mulcahy PMP Exam Prep Ninth Edition for Project Management?
If you are going to read it for academics, the book does not cover the majority of Project Management terms.
Its primary focus is to help you pass the PMP exam and empower you to think outside the box in Project Management.

Cons:

  • There are many topics that are not covered in this guide and many important terms and topics are slightly touched with very little explanation.
  • The book primarily focuses on passing the exam (which is, however, the ultimate goal) but it skips many important Project Management terms.

About Rita Mulcahy, the Author:

When I started the PMP journey back in 2009, the first two books I was handed over during the 35 PDU training was Kim Heldman’s PMP Exam Study Guide and Rita Mulcahy PMP Exam Prep.

I was so fascinated with the book that I read it over and over again.
Believe me, I read it twice the last week of the exam.

The book helped me with PMI mindset and I felt as if Rita is talking to me and enforcing the concepts in my mind.
When news came that Rita Mulcahy lost the battle with cancer and died, the entire community was shocked and I was particularly sad to lose a good teacher. RIP RITA!

The summary:

Unlike any other PMP study guide, this book will give you an entirely different perspective on how to manage and direct a project.

Its conversational and straight-forward approach to Project Management will compel you to look at projects from a new angle. It’s undoubtedly the only PMP prep guide that clarifies PMI point of view, necessary for passing the PMP exam.

It skips many important terms and topics of Project Management, but, seems it was intentional from the author, as she wanted you to look at projects from real-world experience and not from an academic perspective.

I would personally recommend using another guide along with PMP exam prep to learn and understand the many terms and topics that might show up in the exam.

I probably miss this part but the questions, answers, and explanations given at each chapter are probably the best among the many test bank simulation questionnaires.
